With the help of so called phishing eMails unsuspecting Internet users are misled to divulge confidential data, like access data for onlinebanking or for other online services. If the bona fide receiver enters passwords or PIN and TAN of his onlinebanking access into the indicated form fraudsters can perform actions in his name or realize transactions from his bank account.
As the tricks of the fraudsters are getting more and more sophisticated and phishing eMails often look deceptively genuine it is increasingly more difficult to recognize those phishing eMails. Therefore the phishing protection of SaferSurf already begins to work before the receipt of the dangerous eMails and sorts phishing eMails out before they get to your computer. Therefore clicking on phishing links by accident is impossible.
With SaferSurf the filtering and sorting of the eMails takes place centrally on the SaferSurf server. SaferSurf collects all incoming eMails for you from your mailboxes and checks them concerning the content.
If the SaferSurf filter recognizes that an eMail is already known as phishing or shows characteristics of phishing eMails this eMail will be deleted from the data flow.
In normal operation the phishing filter is continously learning. The response time of the SaferSurf filter is in the range of milliseconds. Therefore phishing attacks are already stopped immediately after the first appearance and the forwarding of dangerous eMails is blocked.
Phishing eMails are taken into quarantine (waste bin) on the SaferSurf server and therefore do not get in contact with your computer. They are buffered for you in the waste bin. In a few cases they can be recovered if required.
The phishing protection is part of the eMail protection functions of SaferSurf and is therefore immediately at the disposal of all SaferSurf user that collect their eMails via SaferSurf without further installation and without changing any settings.
SaferSurf supports POP3 mailboxes in all popular eMail programs on the operating system Windows, e.g.: MS Outlook, MS Outlook Express, Windows Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird. After the automatic setup the functions can be used immediately. Please, note that SaferSurf supports only POP3 eMail accounts. IMAP accounts are not supportetd.
