Which methods and tricks are used to camouflage phishing eMails and fake webpages?
Phishers keep on using newer and more sophisticated methods to camouflage:
  • Sender addresses of the phishing eMails are fake.
  • While almost all colors, graphics and links contained in the HTML eMail are taken from the original writing or webpages of the supposed sender and the links lead to their correct webpages (for example homepage, help pages, imprint) the phishing eMail contains a link that leads to a completely different address namely the fake webpage.
  • The fake URL that is linked to does not correspond with the shown name.
  • The fake URL that is linked to is displayed but is similar to the original bank address (for example little typing errors, 0=O, transposed letters, "musterbank.org" instead of "musterbank.de", use of Cyrillic letters).
  • URLs with very long and difficult to understand server names are used.
  • Javascript code manipulates the URL display in the browser.
  • The symbol of the key is faked with JavaScript graphics in the browser window on the fake webpages.
  • Phishing pages are located on own encrypted webservers of the fraudster that means the pages show the characteristics of encryption.
